Why Your Diagnosis Might Be Wrong: The Case for Questioning Medical Tests

Medical diagnoses are often seen as definitive, but they can be wrong more often than you might think. Tests, while valuable, are not infallible. From faulty equipment to human error, there are many reasons why you should approach a diagnosis with a healthy dose of scepticism. Questioning a diagnosis isn’t about distrusting doctors—it’s about taking control of your health and ensuring you get the right care.

One major reason to question a diagnosis is the potential for false positives or negatives. For example, blood tests, imaging scans, or even biopsies can produce misleading results. A 2018 study in the British Medical Journal found that up to 20% of diagnoses for conditions like cancer or heart disease may be incorrect. This can lead to unnecessary treatments or missed opportunities for proper care. Factors like lab errors, outdated equipment, or even the time of day a test is taken can skew results.

Human error also plays a role. Doctors are highly trained, but they’re not perfect. They might misinterpret symptoms, overlook rare conditions, or rely too heavily on test results without considering the full picture. For instance, conditions like Lyme disease or fibromyalgia are notoriously hard to diagnose accurately because their symptoms overlap with other illnesses. If you’re told you have a condition that doesn’t quite fit your symptoms, it’s worth asking for a second opinion.

Another issue is the pressure of time. In busy healthcare systems like the NHS, doctors often have limited time to spend with each patient. This can lead to rushed conclusions or missed details. A patient who asks questions or seeks clarification might prompt a doctor to reconsider their initial assessment, potentially catching an error before it becomes a problem.

Questioning a diagnosis doesn’t mean rejecting it outright. It’s about being proactive. Ask your doctor to explain the test results in detail. What do the numbers mean? Were there any borderline results? Could another condition cause similar symptoms? If the diagnosis is serious, consider seeking a second opinion from a specialist. You might also research reputable medical sources to better understand your condition—but be cautious of unverified online information.

It’s also worth noting that patients know their bodies best. If a diagnosis feels off or the prescribed treatment isn’t working, don’t hesitate to speak up. For example, women are often misdiagnosed with mental health issues when they have physical conditions like endometriosis, simply because their symptoms are less understood. Advocating for yourself can make a life-changing difference.

In short, always question a diagnosis—not out of distrust, but to ensure accuracy. Tests can be wrong, doctors can make mistakes, and time constraints can cloud judgement. By asking questions, seeking second opinions, and staying informed, you become an active partner in your healthcare. Your health is too important to leave to chance.
